Shopping is ruthless in a useful way. It shows up when you are available and quietly punishes you when you are not. The lag between stock and feed is where money leaks.
Typical leak
SKU sells down. Site says limited. Feed still cheerful. Click happens. Customer bounce or cancel. Quality signals soften. You spend more to stay visible.
Practical habits
- Shorten the path from Shopify inventory to feed updates. Stale feeds are a tax.
- Do not build big brand campaigns on SKUs you cannot replenish quickly.
- Watch disapprovals and “limited availability” patterns instead of only ROAS tiles.
Google-only tools can be excellent at auction mechanics. They will not care that your ops inbox is on fire. Someone has to hold catalogue truth next to demand. That is the Shopify-specific problem space we outline in Google Ads for Shopify.
Feed hygiene that is not glamorous
Titles, availability, and identifiers sound boring until a week of wasted clicks teaches you otherwise. Assign an owner. “Everyone” means no one.
Questions people actually ask
How often should the feed update?
As often as sell-through demands. High velocity hurts at multi-hour lag.
Owner checklist
- Who gets paged when availability is wrong?
- What is the maximum acceptable lag from Shopify to feed?
- Which SKUs are allowed in brand-new Shopping spend?
If those answers live only in someone’s head, you will repeat the same week every quarter.
What “good” looks like after a stockout week
You will still get some ghost clicks. The goal is fewer of them, faster recovery of feed accuracy, and no new budget piled on SKUs that cannot fulfil. If your only success metric is ROAS during a stockout week, you will keep learning the wrong lesson.
When stock returns, do not instantly re-open full prospecting. Confirm feed availability, site availability, and a clean landing experience first. Then spend.
